Birch Bark Letter also nods to Birch Bark Letter No. 292, a real birch-bark text unearthed in 1957 in the Novgorod region and often described as the oldest known text written in a Finnic language. A short trace from another era, it carries more than its size suggests, much like the album’s tight, clearly shaped compositions.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe album’s listening map nods to Japanese ambient figures Hiroshi Yoshimura, Satoshi Ashikawa and Ryuichi Sakamoto, and to the place-and-memory sensitivity of Ernest Hood’s Neighborhoods, where everyday sound, landscape and recollection become structure.
