This is a very interesting collaboration. Jeph Jerman teams up with Tim Olive for this cassette, mixing each other's recordings. The A-side consists of sound sources recorded by Jeph Jerman, and the B-side vice versa. JJ is more known for his lo-fi output, utilizing lots of tape players and crude field recordings, while Tim Olive has a more “academic” focus on noise. Both artists and sides complement each other perfectly.
JJ's side features sound sources consisting of percussion, metal objects, and prepared turntables. In Tim Olive's hands, the finalized result is more “hi-fi” and maybe more dynamic than Jerman's usual work.
Tim Olive's recordings are more electronic (magnetic pickups, metal objects, and circuits), and as you can guess, JJ's mixing brings a nice roughness to them. Just like the title ‘Pancakes’ suggests, each artist creates their best pancakes, while the other adds whipped cream and jelly to make it truly stand out.
The tape is mastered by Grant Richardson, making it sound coherent as a whole. Visually, the tape is also stunning, like all BISAD titles, with thick cardboard j-cards with a nice metallic finish. Let’s also add that the tape sounds really good.
