Väinö Karjalainen is a Helsinki-based musician, producer, recording and mixing engineer. Known for his work behind the console and for shaping records across Finland’s contemporary scene, he now steps forward with Birch Bark Letter, his debut solo album.

Birch Bark Letter is a concise, tactile record where water, light and silence feel almost physical. While ambient music is often associated with long-form drift, Karjalainen works in fragments. Tracks arrive like clipped observations of places and moods, then step away, leaving an afterimage rather than an explanation.

The title is more than a poetic gesture. Birch Bark Letter also nods to Birch Bark Letter No. 292, a real birch-bark text unearthed in 1957 in the Novgorod region and often described as the oldest known text written in a Finnic language. A short trace from another era, it carries more than its size suggests, much like the album’s tight, clearly shaped compositions.

The album’s listening map nods to Japanese ambient figures Hiroshi Yoshimura, Satoshi Ashikawa and Ryuichi Sakamoto, and to the place-and-memory sensitivity of Ernest Hood’s Neighborhoods, where everyday sound, landscape and recollection become structure. Still, the centre of gravity stays close to the ground: northern fields, wood, heat, and water as a constant carrier of mood.
